(A note from the desk of The Editor…)
Welcome to Genology. (You can wipe your feet on the mat).
Alright, so let’s get this out of the way. ‘Genology.’ Yes, as in ‘Generation.’ Took us ages, that.
But let’s be clear: this isn’t some dusty museum. We’re not calling ourselves a ‘Home of Nostalgia’ because that sounds like a place that smells faintly of your nan’s sideboard and old Pifco gadgets.
This is the new HQ for anyone who gets it.
This is for all of us who still feel a genuine, physical pang of anxiety when we remember the sound of a dial-up modem connecting. It’s for anyone who knows that real Saturday morning television died with Live & Kicking and The Big Breakfast. It’s for the people who still, decades later, can’t quite believe The Crystal Maze is just a game show and not a genuine life goal.
We’re obsessed with the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. Not in that misty-eyed “everything was better back then” way – I mean, come on, we had to rewind films with our fingers, and the fashion was basically a crime scene.
No, we’re here to properly rake over the coals. We’re here to argue.
We want to debate the exact moment East 17 went wrong, analyse the geopolitical subtext of GoldenEye on the N64, and finally get to the bottom of what, scientifically, was in a Findus Crispy Pancake.
So, if you’ve ever found yourself in a heated pub debate about whether the ZX Spectrum or the Commodore 64 was the superior machine…
If you still measure time by which albums you had on C90 cassette tapes…
And if you’ve ever had to explain to a 20-year-old the sheer, unadulterated joy of circling things in the Argos catalogue…
…then you’re in the right place. Pull up a chair. We’ve got a lot to talk about.
Regards Jess – Feature Editor
